From strategic network design to concrete improvement options for your practice in 6 weeks.
In this module, you will delve into the design and optimization of logistics networks, from strategic choices regarding locations and infrastructure to tactical decisions about route planning and modalities. You will explore how networks are structured, what bottlenecks exist, and how you can improve performance using models, data, and smart design principles. The learning journey begins with a strategic perspective on smart logistics: how do you design networks that are scalable, agile, and future-proof? You will then delve deeper into networks in motion and long-distance transport, ultimately arriving at the operational realities of first-mile, last-mile, and urban logistics. Over six weeks, you will complete an online kickoff, three intensive on-campus days, and a deepening phase. You'll conclude with a graded assignment based on your practical experience. By combining theory with modeling, practical cases, and current issues, you will develop the insight and skills to better understand, design, and improve service-oriented networks.
Online kick-off
During the online kickoff, you will meet your instructors and fellow participants and learn about the program's structure and the final assignment. You will explore your learning goals, case study, and expectations, so you can focus on your on-campus work.
Day 1 – Designing networks from a logistics strategy perspective
The first day marks the starting point of the module and places network design within a broader strategic framework. You will explore how logistics networks must adapt to changing customer expectations, digitalization, sustainability requirements, and spatial constraints.
Day 2 – Decision Models in Long-Haul Transport
On day 2, the focus shifts to networks in motion: how are logistics decisions made within the middle section of the supply chain, also known as the transit chain? You will learn how transport flows are bundled, planned, and optimized over longer distances, nationally or internationally.
Deepening after the lecture days
Between and after the lectures, you will continue working independently with readings, assignments, and your own case study. You will apply insights from the lectures to your practice, further develop scenarios and networking options, and prepare for the final assignment.
Assessment of your own practice
You will complete the master module with a graded assignment that directly aligns with your work environment and learning objectives. In this assignment, you will demonstrate your ability to analyze network issues, justify design choices, and formulate improvement options for your supply chain.
