Digital Strategy and Architecture

From digital vision to coherent digital architecture in your organization in 6 weeks.

In this module, you will explore how digital strategy translates into a workable design for organizations, processes, data, and systems. You will examine digital core capabilities, business and enterprise architecture, and the role of ecosystems and platforms. This will give you insight into how architecture guides choices in technology, governance, and collaboration.

The learning journey begins with the question of what digital strategy means in practice: what ambitions do you have, what capabilities do you need, and how do you structure processes, applications, and data? You will then delve into frameworks, architectural principles, and ecosystems as tools for making complexity manageable. The module concludes with practical case studies in which executives and architects demonstrate how they connect strategy, data, and technology, and how you can use this in your own context.

In six weeks, you will complete an online kickoff, three intensive on-campus days, and an in-depth phase. You will conclude with a graded assignment based on your own organization or client case. By combining theory, frameworks, and practical examples, you will develop both conceptual clarity and concrete tools to manage digital strategy and architecture in a coherent manner.

Online kick-off

During the online kickoff, you will meet your instructors and fellow participants and learn about the program's structure and the final assignment. You will explore your learning goals, case study, and expectations, so you can focus on your on-campus work.

Day 1 – From digital vision to business architecture

The first day focuses on translating digital strategy into business architecture and organizational design. You will explore what the organization needs to be able to do (capabilities) to achieve its ambitions and how to translate these into processes, roles, systems, and data. You will see how business architecture creates cohesion instead of fragmentation, and the impact this has on your product and service portfolio.

Day 2 – Connecting Frameworks and Ecosystems

Day 2 focuses on how to use architectural frameworks and ecosystems to manage digital complexity. You will explore leading enterprise architecture frameworks and examine how to apply them pragmatically rather than dogmatically. Simultaneously, you will explore how ecosystems and platform models influence architectural choices and what that means for collaboration with partners, customers, and suppliers.

Day 3 – Architecture in practice and application

The third day focuses on concrete practical applications. You will work with cases that combine strategy, data, and technology, and see how organizations use architecture for scalability, agility, and innovation. You will analyze the choices made, governance structures, and dilemmas, and translate these insights to your own context: what does this mean for your organization, portfolio, and next steps?

Deepening after the lecture days

Between and after the lectures, you will continue working independently with readings, assignments, and your own case study. You will apply insights from the lectures to your organization, further develop architectural principles, scenarios, and roadmaps, and prepare for the final assignment.

Assessment of your own practice

You will complete the master module with a graded assignment that directly aligns with your work environment and learning objectives. In this assignment, you will demonstrate your ability to analyze digital strategy and architecture in conjunction, justify choices, and formulate concrete next steps for your organization.
